Since being admitted to the practice of law in 1988, Mr. Macher has limited his practice to the field of criminal law.  In his trial practice, Mr. Macher has served as defense counsel in cases ranging from routine misdemeanors to serious felonies.  His jury trial experience includes assorted misdemeanors, Sexually Violent Predator commitment trials, sex crimes, and violent felonies, including three murder cases.  Mr. Macher has tried four death penalty cases in which he and a second attorney represented the defendant.

 In his appellate practice, Mr. Macher has represented the appellant in some 175 felony appeals, including many murder cases.  He has presented oral argument before the California Supreme Court in two cases,  People v. Cleveland and Veasley (2004) 32 Cal.4th 704 [11 Cal.Rptr.3d 236, 86 P.3d 302], a death penalty appeal; and Price v. Superior Court (2001) 25 Cal.4th 1046 [108 Cal.Rptr.2d 409, 25 P.3d 618], a murder case in which he contested the constitutionality of Penal Code section 784.7.  He has also argued cases before the California courts of appeal for the second, third, fourth, and fifth appellate districts, as well as the federal Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.

 Mr. Macher is admitted to practice law in California, the United States District Court for the Central District of California, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States Supreme Court.
