Professor Chavez graduated as valedictorian, summa cum laude, from Western State College of Law in 1998. After graduation, he secured a research attorney position for an associate justice at the California Court of Appeal, Fourth District, Division Three, where he drafted proposed opinions for the court. Thereafter, Professor Chavez gained a position as a staff attorney and worked directly on civil cases for federal magistrate and district court judges of the United States District Court, Central District of California, for six years. He then became a law clerk to a magistrate judge followed by a two year law clerk position for a federal district court judge. Professor Chavez gained extensive litigation, legal research, and writing experience in the courts, and also interviewed and supervised numerous law student externs during his ten years of government service in the state and federal courts’ intense research and writing environments.

After government service, Professor Chavez founded a law firm and became an adjunct professor at Western State College of Law, followed by his current position as a member of the full time faculty since 2010. Professor Chavez is currently the Director of Western State College of Law’s Judicial & Civil externship program and an Assistant Professor of Lawyering Skills.
