The Law Review and Business Law Center Consider the Great Recession

Four years have passed since Bear Sterns collapsed, and the economy is still reeling from the aftermath of the events that followed.  The effectiveness of policy decisions made and not made - then and now -loom powerfully in the upcoming election cycle.

These issues were explored at “Four More Years? Business Law and the Great Recession,” a symposium presented on March 3rd and co-sponsored by the Western State University Law Review and the school’s Business Law Center.

Business Law Center Director, David Groshoff, introduced three panels that followed the financial crisis from the collapse of the real estate market, through the fits and starts of federal bailouts and regulatory responses, to the morass of a prolonged recession.

Professor Tracie Porter, whose varied career in real estate, business and lending law, has wended its way through the crisis, invited the audience to follow her developing thoughts on more onerous regulation of financial institutions and punitive penalties for bad actors.

The luncheon keynote was delivered by renowned scholar and casebook author Douglas Whaley who posited how the UCC had been an ineffective tool in dealing with the crisis and what changes are needed to reform it.

Also making presentations on Saturday, were guests Arnold Rosenberg, Assistant Dean of Thomas Jefferson School of Law; Mary Jo Wiggins, Vice Dean of the University of San Diego School of Law;  Professor Reza Dibadj of the University of San Francisco Law School, Caryn Becker, policy counsel for the Center for Responsible Lending, and Ryan Hinson of the S.E.C.

In addition to Groshoff and Porter, Professors Edith Warkentine and Kevin Mohr were participants in the panel presentations.
