Criminal Defense Clinic

The Western State College of Law Criminal Defense Clinic (WSCLCDC) offers students a unique opportunity to gain real-world experience in criminal law. This 4-unit course integrates hands-on clinic work with comprehensive classroom instruction, developing the skills and compassion necessary for ethical and effective advocacy.

Course Structure

The WSCLCDC is divided into two main components:

  1. Live Client Clinic (2 Units): Partnering with the offices under the Orange County Public Defender, students will work directly with clients on a range of criminal cases, gaining invaluable experience in a real-world legal setting. Under the supervision of our experienced clinical faculty, and pursuant to the State Bar’s Rules Governing the Practical Training of Law Students, students will develop and practice essential lawyering skills, including:
    • Client interviewing
    • Case development
    • Issue spotting
    • Motion writing
    • Courtroom advocacy

Students will have the opportunity to represent clients in court, under the direct supervision of clinic faculty, providing a unique and impactful learning experience.

  2. Classroom Seminar (2 Units): This component consists of in-person classes held on the WSCL campus. The seminars include a combination of lectures, exercises, and discussions focused on criminal defense advocacy.

Prerequisites
