Entrepreneurship Clinic

The Western State College of Law’s Entrepreneurship Clinic (WSCLEC) is a four-credit, one-semester course designed to introduce students to the practice of law through a combination of hands-on experience and academic instruction.

Course Structure

The WSCLEC is divided into two main components:

  1. Legal Clinic (2 Units): Students provide legal advice and assistance to entrepreneurs, start-ups, small businesses, and non-profits. The clinic operates both remotely and in the on-campus law office, allowing students to gain practical experience in different settings.
  2. Classroom Seminar (2 Units): This component consists of live, in-person classes, held on the WSCL campus. The seminars include a mix of lectures, exercises, and discussions focused on the various legal matters and projects handled in the clinic.

Practical Skills Development

Students in the WSCLEC will have the opportunity to develop essential lawyering skills, including:

  • Client interviewing
  • Case management
  • Advice and counsel
  • Negotiations
  • Drafting and reviewing key documents and agreements

Components of the WSCLEC

The course comprises four key components:

  1. Seminar: Weekly two-hour sessions that cover a range of relevant topics.
  2. Fieldwork: Real-world application of legal knowledge through direct client interaction.
  3. Supervision: Regular feedback and guidance from experienced professionals.
  4. Rounds: Reflective discussions and peer learning opportunities.

Client Matters

Students will assist clients with a variety of legal issues, such as:

  • Forming business entities
  • Drafting documents governing business operations
  • Negotiating business-related agreements
  • Providing counsel to start-ups and existing small businesses

Commitment and Responsibility

The WSCLEC requires a significant time commitment, with students expected to log a minimum of 32 hours per unit over the semester, totaling 128 hours. This immersive experience aims to prepare students to become skilled and competent legal advisors.
