Institute for Global Law & Policy

Western State College of Law is proud of its diverse student and faculty, who hail from around the world. For this reason and because international affairs are of an ever-increasing importance to legal practitioners in California and elsewhere, Western State College of Law offers several opportunities for our students to become acquainted with issues of public and private international law.

The Institute arranges presentations by experts in the field for students and external audiences on highly topical issues of national and international law such as energy and disaster law, environmental law, national security law and international business law. Students who wish to write about international legal affairs themselves can obtain expert advice on how to do so through the Institute just as some may get a chance to serve as research assistants to law professors writing about a range of national and international issues.

The Institute is directed by Professor Todd Brower. Professor Brower publishes in international journals and often presents at international conferences around the world. He has worked with the courts of the United Kingdom and the governments of Montenegro, Serbia and El Salvador on judicial education. Because he has lived and worked in various countries outside the U.S., he and the Institute are able to give the benefit of that experience to students interested in studying law abroad.

ENVIRONMENTAL LAW SOCIETY HEARS ABOUT DEVELOPING CLIMATE CHANGE LAW

Professors Myanna Dellinger and Stacey Sobel gave a presentation to the newly-formed Environmental Law Society on developing climate change law at the sub-national, national and supranational levels, as well as the constitutional implications of such new law.

The Western State College of Law ELS is dedicated to providing and promoting a forum for education, advocacy, and scholarship aimed at protecting the environment. ELS seeks to inform the law school and surrounding community about environmental issues and sponsor engaging activities such as symposia, documentaries, research projects, social and networking events.
