Western State College of Law is committed to giving back to the community, and our newest 1L students exemplified this commitment on August 16th when they participated in a project where they assembled over 200 care packages for the homeless and foster children. Students packed essential items for the homeless, as well as personalized bags with messages of hope filled with wholesome items like teddy bears and books for children in the foster system. These efforts contribute to the community by empowering our most vulnerable with hope, reminding them that they are not forgotten.
Community Service Plays a Crucial Role in the Legal Profession
James W. Gilliam, Director of Career Development and Public Interest Programs at Western State, emphasized the importance of community service in the legal profession, noting the ABA and California Bar Association’s recommendation of at least 50 hours of service per year. He also highlighted Western State’s tradition of honoring students who volunteer with special recognition at graduation.
The event was generously sponsored by Everett Dorey LLP, a civil litigation firm that is dedicated to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion. Silvia Schaffer, a partner at Everett Dorey LLP, spoke to the students about the importance of giving back and shared how the firm engages with the community through various sponsorships, including the Veterans Legal Institute, Orange County Coalition for Diversity in the Law, Public Law Center, and Make a Wish Foundation. Their support for this project aligns with the values of Western State and highlights their dedication to fostering positive change in the community.
The project supported two non-profit organizations, Operation Helping Hands (OHH) and Foster Love. OHH, founded by Western State alumna and Hall of Fame Member, Kim Valentine (Class of 1997), provides basic necessities to the homeless and scholarships to underserved youth. Foster Love helps children in the foster system achieve their dreams by offering essential resources and educational opportunities.
